How to use Protein Foods

Different high protein foodsProtein foods are the most important nutrients needed by the human body. Proteins are the first nutrients needed by babies as they stand in for all other nutrients.

Protein foods are responsible for building the body. Proteins are used by the body to build up new cells and repair worn out ones. Most of the body’s tissues are made of proteins and any of them that may need replacement will require proteins. Proteins are used to build healthy nails, hair and muscles. Sufficient protein in the diet will increase the muscle strength and hence general activity of the body.  Healthy and beautiful skin is also built by proteins.

Protein foods are also a great source of energy. In the absence of fats and carbohydrates, proteins are converted into glucose by the body. This is burnt down by the body to release energy. Proteins contain carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sometimes atoms of them. The nitrogen portion of the protein is removed and the hydrogen, oxygen and carbon portions are combined to form glucose. Proteins in the liver are preferred for this conversion than those in the brains and heart.

The process of cell division is ultimately dictated by proteins. The first phase of cell division known as protein synthesis is basically a copying of proteins for the new cell to be formed. The mitotic division process itself also requires proteins. Cell walls are made of protein and if a cell divides, it requires a new wall. Proteins act to provide this wall.

In the production of enzymes and hormones, protein foods are essential. These bodily chemicals are made mainly of amino acids, the end products of proteins. Enzymes control the digestion process whiles hormones control the metabolism of the body. The organs and tissues in the body are all controlled by one hormone or the other and making these chemicals very important in the body.

Surprisingly, protein foods also contain other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Taking enough protein foods therefore supply the body with those nutrients. Vitamins improve the immune system and also control metabolism while the minerals build up the bones, teeth and other important organs of the body. They also help in detoxification of the body and prolonging its lifespan.

Protein foods, aside all the good that they stand to offer also have bad effects. First and foremost, if there is too much amino acid in the blood, the excess is converted and stored in fats. This means and increase in fats in the body and all the associated problems such as high cholesterol, cellulite, increase body weight and all.

Protein foods are very important and must be inculcated into every meal. This is because almost every activity of the body needs proteins. In as much as our bodies need proteins, we must bear in mind that too much of them will also harm as. Always check the label of foods and find more information to know how much protein some food contains and how much you need in your body.
